Environmental education

Samaria National Park Management Body began in 2010 a program of environmental education which included visits to primary schools in order to inform pupils about the protected area of Lefka Ori. Through specific material the natural and human environment of the area is presented, as well as the main pressures put on the protected area. Particular reference is made to the Gorge of Samaria, where in 2012 fifty years were completed since its declaration as a National Park. Some schools also visit the InformationCenter at Xyloskalo, Omalos. 2010-2011 The school year 2010-2011, 525 pupils from 20 elementary schools of the Prefecture of Chania participated in the environmental education program.

2011-2012 The school year 2011-2012, 891 pupils from 14 elementary schools of the Prefecture of Chania participated in the environmental education program.

2012-2013 The school year 2012-2013, 1211 pupils from 24 schools participated in the environmental education program.

EMERGENCY NOTICE

The Natural Environment & Climate Change Agency would like to inform you that, taking into account the latest forecasts, the National Park of Samaria will be open again from Saturday 24 September 2022, from both entrances, for the entire length of the route. It is reminded that, as is the case during the operation period of the National Park, if information is received about weather phenomena that may put in danger the visitors and the personnel of the National Park, or in case of occurrence of damages on the main path, the Gorge will be closed immediately and visitors will be asked to exit according to the instructions of the rangers. In case it is considered necessary, there will be an update press release.
